History of Computers in Nepal

Computers in Nepal have a fairly young history relative to the world leaders in this field, yet it is marked by resilience, adaptability, and fast catching up within the limited resources of an underdeveloped country in the Himalayas. From the mainframe computers that were leased for the purpose of conducting the country’s censuses in the 1970s to the flourishing IT industry that exports hundreds of millions of dollars worth of its products overseas nowadays, the progress made by the computer industry in Nepal parallels the socio-economic development of the country itself.

Early Beginnings (1960s–1970s)

In pre-computer era, Nepal had to depend on manual procedures and basic calculators for managing big volumes of data. For instance, during 1961 AD (2018 BS) census, Nepal used an electronic calculator termed as “Facit” (sometimes also written as Facet). It took nearly 6 years and 6 months to analyze data for about 9.6 million persons, which delayed national programs such as five years plan.
However, the real revolution came during 1971 AD (2028 BS), when Nepal got its very first computer called IBM 1401. This second generation computer operated through transistor and magnetic core memory. Government of Nepal hired this computer (for NRs. 125,000 per month or at equivalent foreign rates) for national census at the Central Bureau of Statistics. Data analysis for more than 11.25 million persons took around 1 year, 7 months, and 15 days.
This international machine heralded the age of computer in Nepal and was purchased afterward to be installed at National Computer Center (NCC).

The Mainframe Period (1970s–1980s)

In 1974 AD (2031 BS), the establishment of Electronic Data Processing Center (Yantrik Saralikaran Kendra), renamed as National Computer Center (NCC), which involved national level data processing and computer training, was made possible through assistance from Britain.
The 1981 census (2038 BS) saw the acquisition of ICL 2950/10, a newer and more sophisticated mainframe computer (fourth generation) made in Britain with 64 terminals, funded through UNDP & UNFPA with an estimated cost of USD 2 million. The processing work took one year three months to complete. This computer is currently displayed in a museum in Singha Durbar.
During this time, some Nepalese students traveled overseas (India, Thailand, the USA, among others) for computer studies, due to limited availability in Nepal. One such pioneer in the field is Muni Bahadur Shakya, who reportedly created Nepal’s first-ever microcomputer by designing a desktop system with a typewriter combined with electronic circuits and TV screen.

Rise of Microcomputers and Private Sector (1990s)

Microcomputers (Apple, Vector, and Sirius brands) were being imported during the late 1980s and early 1990s through private firms. There are firms like Computer Consultancy (CC), Management Information Processing System (MIPS), Data System International (DSI), and more, who started to offer software exports from Nepal (DSI had programmers working for them in America).
The year 1992 became important due to the creation of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), which got officially registered much later and transformed to CAN Federation in 2015. It played the role of the association for all businesses dealing with computers and related products.
University programs were expanded to include more options:

Computer programs offered at Tribhuvan University through IOE.
Introduction of Computer Science and Engineering program at Kathmandu University in 1994.
Other universities soon followed (including Pokhara, Purbanchal).
Internet connection made its way to Nepal in 1995 provided by Mercantile Communication. Initially focused on email services only. It took time to gain popularity (internet penetration only reached 0.2% in 2000).

The Digital Policy Era (2000s Onward)

Government actions included:

IT Policy 2000 (2057 BS): Aspirational policy aiming to make Nepal a name on the international IT map, support education, and increase exports.
The Telecommunication Act of 1997 and the creation of Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).
Subsequent policies: ICT Policy 2015, Electronic Transactions Act 2063, and the Digital Nepal Initiative (2019) emphasizing eight sectors such as digital foundations, education, and economy.

Organizations like the National Information Technology Center (NITC) and the Government Integrated Data Center (2001) facilitated e-governance. Banking became digital (for instance, Nepal Bank Ltd. in the 1990s-2000s with applications like PUMORI). Media transitioned to digital platforms, with many digital news portals surfacing.
NepaLinux (2000s): A customized version of Linux by Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya that enabled Nepali computing, albeit with reduced subsequent development efforts.

Current Status: IT as an Economic Pillar

Nepal’s IT industry has emerged as a major growth engine due to the presence of young, English-speaking manpower, cost effectiveness, and remote working trends. The export of IT services amounted to USD 515 million (at an average annual growth rate above 64%) in 2022, with recent figures nearing or surpassing USD 1 billion. IT plays an important role in GDP, forex reserves, and jobs (directly tens of thousands, including freelancers).
Factors driving Nepal’s IT industry:

Freelancers and Outsourcing: Freelancers use platforms like Upwork and Fiverr for software development, digital marketing, data annotation, business process outsourcing, and others. Nepal stands 19th in an outsourcing competitiveness ranking.
IT Companies and Startups: Working with foreign companies in healthcare, finance, artificial intelligence, and other sectors.
Infrastructural Support: Improved internet infrastructure (mobile broadband is more common); ISPs include WorldLink, Nepal Telecom, and NCell leading the mobile data market.
Education: IT courses at schools; many privately-owned training institutes like Broadway Infosys and IT education in universities such as computer engineering, BCA, etc.

CAN Federation continues its efforts to position Nepal as a global IT hub through strategic roadmaps.

Challenges on the Path

There are still some obstacles to overcome:

Lack of Infrastructure: Inequalities in access to electricity, internet speed/availability (especially in rural areas), and digital divide.
Brain Drain: Skilled graduates tend to look for other destinations where there are more job opportunities and better pay because the lack of quality jobs, pay, and infrastructure locally compels them.
Mismatch in Skill Set: The education system might not match the requirements of today’s world in terms of new fields such as artificial intelligence and software engineering.
Policy Implementation: Even though ambitious plans have been laid down, their implementation may prove difficult; e.g., IT park at Banepa.

The unemployment rate among IT graduates is another problem.

Future Prospects and Recommendations

Nepal appears ready to experience “leapfrog” development through digital technology. The nation boasts a young population, diaspora connections, growing connectivity, and worldwide interest in cost-effective tech talent.
In order to expedite:

Establish dependable broadband, data center facilities, and renewable energy sources for tech infrastructure.
Ensure curricula align with industry demands (AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity) and emphasize hands-on training/practicums.
Boost startups and outsourcing operations through favorable policies, simpler regulation, and funding.
Close the urban-rural digital divide by implementing focused e-governance and educational initiatives.
Facilitate public-private collaborations and utilize organizations such as the CAN Federation and NITC.

If sustained, Nepal may become a South Asian innovation hotspot for IT services, generating high-paying employment opportunities and enhancing its overall contribution to national development.

Computers in Nepal, which started out as merely an instrument to conduct census, have undergone tremendous changes from the IBM 1401 census machine to the current day freelancers and software companies that operate within Nepal. Computers have transformed themselves into an economic necessity as well as a means through which modernization can be attained in fields such as banking, education, media, and many others. As Nepal steps into its future and integrates technology more deeply into its economy, the question of how best to develop its potential is paramount.
